High Performance Light Condensing Standard Type Line Heater LHW-55

Printable PDF       Manual

The standard line heater “LHW-55/f25/L” is a line light condensing lamp heater unit based on halogen lamp heating. This product has been aimed at the highest performance as a line light condensing lamp heater unit with a mirror width of 2.16 in (55 mm), and focal length 0.98 in (25 mm), and is made up of a deep ellipse mirror that is wrapped around up to the reverse curve area.

It also supports large output power compared to the previous heaters, and a high output which is almost double can be now obtained. (H18 type, for each unit length) To ensure reliable high temperature heating, a little ingenuity is required along with the selection of the heater. Examine the “Cavity heating method” also.

Line condensing is not limited for line heating only. Overall heating is possible by placing the work on the conveyor and irradiating with the line heater. In addition, can be used for heating along a strip by shifting from the focal length position.

--> “Surface heating applications based on light condensing line heater”

Note: Basically the line heater is lit such that the lamp axis is horizontal. Installing vertically or diagonally, may cause deformation of filaments and overheating of the lamp sealing parts resulting in a shorter service life. However, please contact Fintech as there may be cases for which solutions are offered.

This heater has an effective mirror length of 11.02 in (280 mm), but can be manufactured in the range of 3.93 in (100 mm) to 98.42 in (2500 mm). This is the latest variant of the NIL type line heater with a long focal length specification and a long track record as a heating device for industrial and research purposes.

Supports higher output that is approximately twice the previous products. The standard is 1 kW for each 0.393 in (10 mm) of the mirror, maximum possible input is approximately 2 kW (in case of L = 280, the standard product is 2 kW but the maximum possible input is approximately 5 kW) → (in case of H18 type that comes with a 0.708 in (18 mm) quartz tube for the lamp)

This is high output is more than twice the older heater of this type and is perhaps the most powerful heater in the world. If the overwhelming power of this heater is used, then various heating applications that were not possible previously can be done easily.
This product has an extremely high-precision optical performance, the focal width is a sharp line of approximately 0.078 in (2 mm) to 0.157 in (4 mm). Also, heating a width is possible by shifting from the focal point (almost uniform heating up to a width of 0.393 in (10 mm)) The condensed light width differs based on the lamp used. The heating width will be almost equal to the diameter of the heating element (filament) of the lamp used. However, the numerical value of the heating width might be different even for the same article depending on the definition. Here, the definition of the heating width is the width of the burn mark when a paper is burnt by irradiation.

When the ambient temperature is high or a high output lamp is used, pass air at a rate of 1.32 gal/min (5 L/min) to 2.64 gal/min (10 L/min) into the lamp cooling air nozzle. Also for lamps exceeding 10 A current.

Ensure that cooling water quantity of 0.13 gal/min (0.5 L/min) flows for each 1 kW. For example 0.66 gal/min (2.5 L/min) or more for a 5 kW lamp.

For lamps up to 3 kW, passing the cooling water through one side of the water channel is also OK. In case of 3 kW to 6 kW, pass the cooling water through both the water channels in a loop. When the lamp exceeds 6 kW, connect both the water channels in parallel and pass the cooling water.

The lamp fixing bracket is made to press the lamp into the V-groove and then fastened by screws. In case of a high output lamp, there is a problem that the light passing through the gaps may heat the inside of the terminal box. The entry of light is prevented by using aluminum plates for the parts that have to reflect the light, and also the gaps are reduced as much as possible.

5 kWHeating experiment of insulating refractory bricks with line heater

The groove formed on the brick is by heating and melting with a 5 kW line heater.

The temperature inside the groove reaches 2732ºF (1500ºC) or more because the absorption of light improves (cavity absorption effect) once the groove starts forming with the irradiation. (measured using a R thermocouple)

Basically water cooling is used for LHW-55/f25/L-type line heater. However, if the maximum temperature of the body is below 320ºF (160ºC), water cooling is not necessarily required. To maintain the body temperature below 320ºF (160ºC) without water cooling, either air has to be blown with a fan on the entire line heater, or the unit has to be used with low power by reducing the voltage.

The following are the temperatures measured at the different parts for the various cooling methods when 200 V - 2 kW line heater is combined with LHW-55/f25/L280. There are no problems when water cooling is used. However, even in this case a part of the main body is heated to temperatures that can cause burns, and safety precautions are required.

When the entire line heater is air cooled with a fan, the temperature reached could be managed at a level that could be endured even when the rated voltage was exceeded (approximately 2 kW). However, sufficient care must be taken as there is no margin. In future we are planning to commercialize air cooling unit as an option, and the heater can be used safely by air cooling with this combination.

If forced cooling is not used at all, either the supply voltage has to be reduced to less than half, or used with ON-OFF, and the OFF time has to be 3 or more times than the ON time to prevent overheating, and this method has to be used by constantly checking the temperature of each part.

Cooling method Mirror unit temperature Terminal box temperature
Water cooling Cooling water 0.26 gal/min (1 L/min) 140ºF (60ºC) 212ºF (100ºC)
Air cooling Overall cooling with 45 W fan 320ºF (160ºC) 176ºF (80ºC)
Not cooled Used with 1/2 voltage 320ºF (160ºC) 230ºF (110ºC)

Temperature of around 8% higher can be obtained with the gold-plated mirror when compared to aluminum polished mirror.8Temperature of around 8% higher can be obtained with the gold-plated mirror when compared to aluminum polished mirror. Energy saving effect is approximately 10%.

Gold-plated mirror:

High performance is obtained, but the cost of gold-plating is high. Cannot be repaired if the plating is damaged due to dirt (plating has to be done again). Measures are required to ensure that the mirror does not get dirty.

This is mandatory for applications where the best performance is required, using gold plating is also required from the perspective of saving energy. Gold plating can be selected as an option.

Aluminum polished mirror:

Performance is lower compared to gold plating, but cost is low. Can be repaired by polishing even if the mirror gets dirty. For example, take the polishing agent (Nippon Migakuryo Industry Co., Ltd. Pikal) in a tissue paper and rub approximately 10 times, the process is complete once the agent is wiped off clean. Aluminum polished mirror can be selected when the operating time is small and there is allowance for the heating performance.

The distribution shown in the figure on the left is for a 2 kW lamp. The emission length in case of the 5 kW lamp has been reduced a little as a measure to prevent heating, therefore the uniform range is slightly narrower.
